If you're putting KONE Transys DX into an existing lobby, the terminal dimensions are the thing to verify first—before price, before timelines. And if you're ordering replacement door hangers, the figure you're least likely to have on hand is the one that determines whether the part fits at all. Measure the mounting location and identify the existing hanger before you order, and the rest of the project tends to go predictably.

I say that from the quality side of vertical transportation. For the past several years, I've reviewed component specifications before they reach site—lobby terminals, door operators, hanger assemblies, trim, cabling. Roughly 90 projects since 2022, and more than half had at least one dimension mismatch between what was ordered and what the shaft or doorway actually allowed. 2. Opening dimensions

The cutout for the terminal, plus clearance for mounting screws and the trim ring. A terminal sized for a 250 x 180 mm cutout won't cover a 270 x 210 mm hole. The reverse is worse: a new terminal that's smaller than the old cutout leaves a gap that needs finishing. That's how a "quick replacement" becomes a lobby repair.

3. Floor-to-terminal height

Measure from the finished floor—including any new stone, tile, or raised access floor that's part of the current renovation. Accessibility requirements apply, so check the standard relevant to your jurisdiction; in many cases, the interactive element should sit around 1000–1100 mm above finished floor. But the code sets the requirement. Your actual building condition sets the truth. Verify both.

What the manual won't tell you is what's behind your lobby wall. That part is site survey work—yours or your installer's. Which is exactly why a fifteen-minute walk to the lobby beats a two-week reorder cycle.

Door Hangers: The Spare Part Most Likely to Be Ordered Wrong

Door hangers are the rollers, brackets, and suspension points on top of the car and landing doors. They carry the door panel through tens of thousands of cycles a year. They're also—in my review queue—the item most likely to arrive with only a building name attached. "Door hangers for [building]" is a real request. I've received it.

The problem? A door hanger from one generation of door operator is not interchangeable with another, even for the same opening width. Roller profile, bracket hole spacing, stack height, rated load—they vary by operator model and door panel weight. A hanger that looks identical in the catalogue photo may not fit the mounting plate at all.

Example from Q1 2025: a residential tower ordered twenty door hanger kits as a rush order. The order had the building name and the doorway width. It didn't have the door operator model or the existing part numbers. Nobody had recorded that the tower used two different hangers—one type for the car doors, another for the landing doors. Not one. So, before you call for hangers, get these three items together:

  • Door type. Car or landing? Left- or right-hand opening? On a large opening, there can be two different hangers in the same doorway set.
  • Operator model and generation. This determines bracket geometry and roller dimensions. If the spec plate is gone, photograph the existing hanger and its stamped part numbers. A clear photo beats a memory.
  • Roller diameter and material. Nylon rollers are quieter and easier on the track. Steel rollers carry heavier panels but wear the track more. The right choice depends on the panel and duty cycle, not on what the supplier has in stock.

I've rejected shipments where a vendor swapped the roller material without approval and called it an upgrade. It wasn't. When a hanger is specified, it's specified for a reason.

And if someone suggests drilling a new hole pattern into the bracket to make a part fit? Step back. That's not a fitting job—it's re-engineering a safety-critical suspension component in the field. It carries liability, and it invalidates whatever approval the part had. Replace the bracket, not the specification.

Why This "Extra Step" Is Actually the Fastest Route

People assume rush orders are expensive because they're hard to satisfy. The reality runs the other way: rush orders are expensive because they're unpredictable. They interrupt planned work, displace other jobs, and still get delayed when the spec is wrong. Every incomplete order I've seen traces back to the same moment: someone decided that a part number could wait until later.

It can't. And it doesn't. The delay gets blamed on the supplier, the technician, the courier—everyone except the missing measurement. The fix is cheap. Twenty minutes per lift, with a tape measure and a phone camera, builds a procurement file that never bounces.

When This Advice Applies Less

Full modernization. If the door operator or hall stations are being replaced as complete, matched sets, the old hanger spec is less relevant. Same for Transys DX when the wall is being refinished anyway. The dimensions still matter, but they're part of the new scope, not a compatibility check.

New builds. Drawings are current, walls are built to spec, equipment is factory-matched. Much less to verify. This article is aimed at retrofits, where the building has history and nobody is quite sure what's behind the panels.

Buildings with undocumented modifications. If a previous contractor installed non-standard parts, the honest answer is an on-site survey by someone qualified. Guessing from old records will cost you twice—once when the part arrives, and again when the liability question comes up. To be fair, this is rare. But when it happens, it's unforgettable.
